At GreenCine we get a ton of freebie promotional screeners, which are, well, to put it kindly, not usually something too exciting. (A rare recent exception to this was Hotel Rwanda, which has been quickly circulating through the office.) It's a bit sad, really, sifting through this dump box of obscure titles with well-known actors, most of them straight-to-video fare... and yet, some of them are intriguing to look at, either because of how ridiculous they are, or just because of.. how ridiculous they are. It's particularly amusing to look at the way they're marketed. You can learn a lot from the tag line - or you can learn nothing.
My favorite examples of Straight to Video marketing efforts now includes The Hillz (which must go on my next worst titles list; the "z" is always added to give a film street cred, some urban flava) is pitched with the tagline (I kid you not), "AMERICAN PIE meets PULP FICTION...with a dash of A CLOCKWORK ORANGE." Oh yeah, and it stars Paris Hilton... Paris Hilton! Interested parties can also enjoy DVD's audio commentary track ... audio commentary! (With Michael Powell and Martin Scorsese. Not.) In case you want to learn how Clockwork Orange's Malcolm MacDowell influenced Paris Hilton.
The Search for Heaven: "the most comprehensive evidence ever compiled" that Heaven exists! Hooray! Go to www.grizzlyadams.tv for more (that's the distributor, Grizzly Adams Family Entertainment)
Zombiez: See above comment re: "z" - oh how fly it is with that extra "z"
Nicolette Sheriden is... Possessed. A title that, I'm not sure, but may have been used before.
Ganked: "Gettin' taken has never been so much fun!" Might be the worst title ever, but the tagline almost makes me want to see it. Nah.
Blood Trap: "Sometimes the only way out is to do the unthkinkable." (You mean, like watch this movie?) Key marketing points include: "Aired on Lifetime on 10/11/04." Sign me up!
Black Cadillac: Randy Quaid stars in a film "based on a true story" - Multiple tag lines include "Your sins will find you" and "If you liked Christine and Joy Ride, you'll love Black Cadillac"
But so far, Paris Hiltonz drama is in first place.
