Nathaniel over at FilmExperience.com has created a pretty comprehensive list for the best actors of this current decade (the aughts, or the 00's). Jude Law sits at #1 on his list. Lists are always fun for debate, and as he notes, the decade is not over yet (and these are all purely subjective, of course). Still, who would you add to the list? Who would you rank at the top?
I was just thinking the other day about actors I always enjoy watching, seeing what they come up with for each role, regardless of the film, and one actor atop that list for me is Geoffrey Rush. I enjoy the hell out of Rush every time I see him. While he first came to prominence here in the States in the 90s, he's done some fine work in the "00's" and I'd sure like to see him added to the list. Some of Rush's performances from 2000 to present include: - Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 2 (of course) - one of the finest villains in a long time; in fact, he made the ghost pirate Barbossa sympathetic while also rather scary. A dandy role only outshined by Depp's more famous one. Also: Munich (2005), The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004) as... Peter Sellers - a superb, almost otherwordly performance in a merely decent film (that seemed a rather pointless one at that); Harvie Krumpet (2003) (voice); Intolerable Cruelty (2003); Finding Nemo (2003) (voice); The Banger Sisters (2002); Frida (2002) as Leon Trotsky!; Lantana (2001) small but pivotal role in a superb, underrated Aussie film; The Tailor of Panama (2001); and let's not forget 2000's Quills - he was mesmerizing as de Sade.
Peter Sarsgaard, Don Cheadle, Brian Cox and Viggo Mortensen are four of the actors on the FilmExperience list I also want to see in just about every movie they're in these days - whether the film is merely okay or good.
The actress list is here. Still thinking about that one, though I find it hard to argue with. As long as Emily Watson and Samantha Morton (adore her though I wish she'd branch out a bit more these days) are on the list, I'm happy.
