New writer's blog: Earl Pomerantz

Veteran television comedy writer Earl Pomerantz (Mary Tyler Moore Show, Taxi, among many other fine credits) is now doing his own blog, and it''s a must=read.

Good timing, because on the spur of the moment I bought Season 2 of Taxi the other day at Amoeba Records, great to have around for those slow evenings, during bouts of insomnia or procrastination. And Mr. Pomerantz relates an anecdote about writing for that show and working for Ed. Weinberger. (And the revelation that Tony Banta was original an Irish boxer named Ryan.)

Bloggers Under Attack! Next, on HBO.

UPDATE 5-5-08: I thought I'd put this at the top because it's important. While it doesn't fully make up for the depths to which he sunk on HBO (more below), Buzz Bissinger's interview on The Big Lead blog goes a long way to make up for it. He is contrite, apologetic, and what's more seems so much more open-minded about blogs, as well as admitting the danger of making sweeping generalizations, that it's almost a relief, especially to those many of us who were fans of his writing in the past. And he makes a good point about the overall dumbing-down of society as well as a general tone of mean-spiritedness and derision in public & media conversations these days (ironic, of course, considering his own behavior). But, still, it's a start.

-----

It's already fairly infamous, and frankly, as I'll point out below, many others have discussed it at length much more satisfyingly than I could at this point. But it ties in with what I've been thinking about for months anyway.

What am I talking about? The latest "attack" on the blogosphere from an Established Journalistâ„¢, in this case writer Buzz Bissinger going bananas on sports blogger Will Deitch (Deadspin) and all sports blogs and all bloggers who blog about everything, on Bob Costas Live. In fact, that ten minutes may be the low point of Bob Costas' career. The roundtable consisted of Bissinger, Deitch, and, oh yes, for no reason whatsoever, Browns wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who has no connection to blogging but must have been booked to be on the show that day no matter what. It was all an utter embarrassment, but it's Bissinger, author of a fantastic book on football, "Friday Night Lights," who should be most ashamed of himself.

First, watch the video clip (partial, not the whole sequence).

Second, read:

Deadspin's reaction.

New blog launched: Progress Report.

I've launched a new blog on progressive politics and on news of interest to me, and my occasional ruminations on such small matters as the state of our society, and as a way to keep this blog more focused on film and writing. But hopefully you'll drop by both places depending on your mood. Here's my announcement:

I've launched this blog as a place to ruminate on the issues of today, as we lead up to the 2008 Presidential election, and issues that go beyond that as well. While it promises to have a "progressive" bent (and I don't use the word "liberal" any longer because I believe it's lost its meaning and place, just as the word "conservative" has been sullied by those who shame the more intriguing ideas of classical conservatism), and while I hope to have us here move beyond the usual vitriolic back and forth seen too often today, I won't deny that this site will reflect my own progressive beliefs.

However, I do welcome comments from all sides here, if anyone feels so moved. But I only ask that such comments remain friendly in tone. I have as much patience for hate speech and flame wars in blog comments as I do for spam, so, in a word, don't.

Lastly, I will have guest posters contributing here when the opportunity arises. No, this will not turn into the Huffington Post, but I do hope to have a variety of voices adding to the mix here.

Some of you may even be getting a note from me soon about this last point. Meanwhile, enjoy.

Random blog of the day.

I like that actor James Urbaniak has a LiveJournal blog, I like that I didn't know about it 'til he referenced and linked to himself on the GC Daily the other day, in reference to a reference by FilmBrain, and I like that he has an animated .gif (borrowed or not) that celebrates the defeat of Democrat-in-name-only Joe Lieberman. All good things, and it's free, too.

Caveh and the NY Times.

I enjoyed both Caveh Zahedi's entry on his indiewire blog about the New York Times review of his film I am a Sex Addict, and the subsequent response from the critic himself, Nathan Lee, in the blog's comments section. Give it a read. Good for... both of 'em.

Women in Business

My mom has a blog now, that she co-moderates. I promised her I'd mention it here.

Welcome to the modern age! Moms have blogs!

Anyway, it's focused on women in business, and is worth a look if that's an area of interest for you.

Hentai "expert" wanted.

I'm currently helping to coordinate GreenCine's new adult-themed offshoot, BlueCine, and we're looking to do something a little different - sex positive stuff, alt.sex, erotica, vintage, woman-centric, and some humor pieces as well... One thing we want to have up there is some decent writing about Hentai (Japanese animated porn, basically, which seems to involve a lot of tentacles going into interesting places).  Ah. Anyway, if you know someone who is both a good writer and has a good knowledge of Hentai (and isn't afraid to admit it), drop me a line. We pay (a little bit).

Domo arigato!

A Feig Fourth of July.

Paul Feig was the main instigator, the lead "geek" behind one of my favorite, and woefully shortlived, shows of all time, Freaks and Geeks. He's written a funny, wise wish for the Fourth of July that, liberal or conservative or archdruid, attempts to be fair and kind and deserves a read.

Including this attempt to bring our divided nation together:

"I'm convinced we're not that far apart in what we desire for our country and for our families and for ourselves. I actually think we're exactly the same in what we want. And so here is my list so far:

1) We'd all like ourselves and our loved ones to not be killed.
2) We'd all like ourselves and our loved ones to be happy.
3) We'd all like ourselves and our loved ones to be completely safe whenever we choose to be.
4) We'd all like ourselves and our loved ones to be comfortable whenever we choose to be.
5) We'd all like to be free to do whatever we want.
6) We'd all like ourselves and our loved ones to not get hurt by someone who's doing whatever they want.
7) We'd all like to not be yelled at or made fun of.
8) We'd all like to believe whatever we want to believe.
9) We'd all like for people who don't agree with what we believe to stop telling us we're wrong.
10) We'd all like to be right.

Now, how do we Americans achieve all these things for ourselves without convincing ourselves that our fellow Americans who also want these things but who believe in different ways of achieving them are all evil and stupid and hellbent on our destruction?

Not to get all "hippie" on you, but I think it has to do with the way we all talk to each other. (I guess I should have said "rap to each other" if I really wanted to pursue the whole hippie thing. But I digress.)

Larry David can't sleep.

This is hilarious, especially for anyone else who suffers from sleeplessness exacerbated by current political climate:

on PalindromesemordnilaP and more.

In case you're wondering or concerned, the GreenCine Daily's home page has been down since yesterday but should be back up soon. The GC techies are busy trying to fix a server overload after a server move that is temporarily preventing it from refreshing new home page. The archive pages are still live, and you can read my reviews of Palindromes and Alison Murray's Mouth to Mouth on the Daily, even while the home page is being fiddled with.

I wish I had more time to check out more SFIFF films but have been too busy packing and moving; however, I'll see and review a few more before it's all over, by gum, come hell or high water.
